Am johnny from ultimate paper mache. Calm and today. I want to answer a really really common question.
And that is how long this paper mach take to dry. Nows two reasons that people ask that question the first reason of course is that they have a deadline theyre making a sculpture today and they needed to be done in a certain amount of time and will they be able to get it done when they need to quite a lot of people actually let me know that they volunteered to make the gigantic sculpture a life for a parade float or something and they have like only two or three weeks to get it done and for that reason. The question how long is it going to take to dry is kind of important and im gonna get to that later because thats a really special situation now the other reason that people ask me quite.
Often is that they remember a rather disappointing experience back in grade school. And the reason that great schools sculpture is quite often end up getting. Moldy is just because of the environment.
That the paper mache sculptures are drying in we dont have to worry about that great school teachers do and i dont i i dont envy them i really dont because youve got like twenty or thirty paper mache sculpture sitting on a table probably a lot of the kids use way too much paper mache paste. Even though the teacher asked him not to and youve got probably more than one or two layers of paper mache on there because the kids you know wanted to use lots of layers in order to make their paper mache sculpture really strong its not necessary. But i can understand why they believe it is and so you have all these sculptures sitting on a table.
Theres a cloud of wet air right above it because when water evaporates from every single one of those sculptures it tries to go into the air. The air gets saturated theres no air moving because all the windows are closed and that wet layer of air just eventually stops the evaporation process and the sculptures cant get dry anymore.
The teachers under a deadline. Shes going to know the projects is that she wants the kids to start tomorrow. So as long as those sculptures feel dry.
Theyre gonna get painted and theyre gonna go home with water on the inside and mold spores. Its going to be really really disappointing in a couple of weeks because nature is going to take its course now do you have to worry about that absolutely not so lets get to the actual answer of how long is it going to take your paper mache to drive the in some ways what i have to say is it depends because i dont know what environment your paper mache sculpture is in and i dont know how many layers youve put on it so if its in a really humid environment. Its going to take a really really long time if you do happen to be in an area like louisiana.
Some areas in india. Where everything takes a really really long time to dry. Dont use flour and water paste use the elmers art paste thats made out of methyl cellulose because mold will need it you wont have the problem you still want to get it dry as quickly as you can.
But you dont need to worry about the mobile taking over so fast. But if you dont live in the tropics and if you are able to just use two or three layers of paper or strips and paste or a really thin layer of paper mache clay because the armature itself provides all of the structure for your sculpture and the paper mache isnt actually trying to hold anything up and if you put your sculpture in front of a fan you should be able to paint it within two days. But if you have to use a whole lot of layers or if you put on a really thick layer of paper mache clay.
Its going to take a lot longer to dry now. I did want to talk to you about really huge sculptures because a lot of times.
You need to get a sculpture done for a parade and you dont really have time to do it. So youre really worried about getting it done on time. You still need to create a solid structure.
So that the paper mache itself is not holding anything up. And that way you can get away with using just two or three layers to pay shei on there you still need a fan. But you need a bigger fan.
If youre doing it out in your garage. Make sure that all the doors are open. So that air can move past.
It you dont want a cloud of wet air hanging around your sculpture. Thats slowing everything down. But youre still going to have an additional problem of gravity.
The very top of your sculpture is going to feel dry. When the bottom of this sculpture is still really really wet because because that moisture is flowing downhill like in a river or something so because of the movement of water on a really big sculpture.
The bottom is going to take a lot longer to dry. You you probably need to give it at least a week. If at all possible make sure that its up off the floor.
So that air can move under it too then even if it feels dry way down at the bottom go ahead and push in on the paper mache with your thumb gently. And if it feels that all soft. Not like a hard paper mache should.
But really soft like slightly damp paper mache you got any movement in it at all you need to leave it for another couple of days. Give yourself time paper mache is not an instant art medium. It really does take time and most of the time of our paper mache sculptures is spent having them drying.
But if you dry your sculpture. As fast as possible keep the air moving use as little paper mache as you possibly can and then after its dry and after its painted make sure that you seal it with a good acrylic varnish and if you take care of this sculpture. It could last 100 years.
So i hope that helps if you havent picked out a project. Yet be sure to go to the art library at the top of my website and pick one out theres over 400 projects on this website. And i know that youre gonna find one that you really love and will really enjoy making and as soon as you get it done be sure to come back to the daily sculptors page and show it off.
Id love to see how it turns out. Ill see you there .
