Greetings and welcome back to the car doctor studios here in anchorage. Alaska. My name name is tim thanks for stopping by the shop.
Today. Hey. We got a special here that were working on today customer brought in this o.
5. Tahoe. Complaining of the service suspension message displayed on the drivers information.
Display and the auto ride system. The air pump air suspension systems not functioning properly. So were going to check some thoughts.
Some stuff out here. Its definitely helpful. If you have a scan tool to access.
The air ride codes on this rig. Its going to its going to be necessary definitely save you a lot of heartache trying to diagnose these complex problems. Theyre super common problem associated with chevrolet tahoes suburbans.
The yukons and yukon denalis and other vehicles with the auto ride system and theyre a common problem with the pump wiring in these systems. But you are going to need to access the the module so you can talk to it so you can pull codes and also do functional tests for a four to diagnosis thing so lets proceed onward. Im going to hook up the virus and were going to see if we have any stored codes look up the virus and interface with this rig.
Weve got a ajo four wheel drive says the five three venti and suspension. Okay. Lets display.
The codes history. We got a left rear position sensor circuit. Fault okay heres something else we can do while were here lets go to functional tests.
I want to make sure the compressors working. We can do a functional compression compressor test command it on and and watch for it you can also see in the data that im getting zero volts at the left rear position sensor. My other sensors are reading properly.
And theres really no no air pressure in the system. But all im going to command it on and i do not hear any pump activity pump is not running so yeah you can see why having the scan tool and being able to view that data for the individual sensors. The the you know all the sensors in the system going down to air pressure and whatnot and being able to command a functional test on the compressor pump which is not responding measures voltage supply to it so im suspicious that the pumps gone bad after quizzing the customer.
I found out that this problems existed for years now. The system is not function properly.
So its its no surprise that there may be multiple problems so in this case. The pump the compressor and the left rear wheel speed sensor are behind the left rear tire on the sink. So well go over the left rear in other cases on suburbans and in later model rigs youll find it on the right rear.
And just need to look in the component locator or just crawl under it and youll be able to find it one one thing you can do is you know you can command it on in a functional test and and rap on it a little bit and see if the pump comes on its definitely common that the brushes go bad in these pumps and fail another thing to know if you run into ton of problems. And its a really expensive fix on these systems. There is an aftermarket system that involves replacing the rear coil springs and the front and rear shocks and then you install little module that basically tells the rest of the system that its that its okay and you wont youll no longer get the message up there and youll have just a conventional suspension in the rig.
And you wont have to worry about the air shocks problems associated with these complex systems. Especially on older year model. Vehicles are high mileage.
Rigs or rigs that have been exposed to a lot of corrosion and whatnot this ones got over 160000. Miles. Which up here is quite a few in.
Alaska the conditions are such that you know anything over 150000 miles on these youre going to experience problems. Like this so. Its no surprise and well just plug away at it.
See if we can figure out whats going on well. Just in case. You run into a front right high sensor problem.
Heres a left front ride height sensor as mounted on the vehicle right here. Its got electrical connector in them on the top back of it its got a little uh linkage that connects to the upper controller. It measures the right height.
Here. If you do get a failure of the front right high sensor check this linkage first off these can snap or become disconnected from the sensor itself and cause a ride height issue. Theyre something were thinking about keep that in mind.
As well okay. Im over here at the left rear wheel well air. You have removed the left rear tire and in so in order to go any further here with the diagnosis will check any of these components you need to access the luck rear wheel speed sensor.
Which is right here mounted just behind this inner fender well cover and then heres the pump motor assembly. Here its the pump motor and valving is all right there so were going to need to get it that as well so even though i could probably just remove a few these clippys and access. This the sensor enough to get out it test it and even change it since were going over here to the pump and everything im just going to pull the entire inner fender well theres three screws on either side couple.
These retainer clips. Were going to remove that pull this cover off see if we can figure out exactly whats going on so just being in the inner fender. Well the pump motor and the sense are exposed to quite a bit of road grit.
A lot of corrosion that can happen here so were going to as part of our testing. Were going to check the wiring.
The connectors and whatnot and make sure theyre still good and go from there and see if its a component failure wiring or connection problem. Or what okay well heres a problem in the wiring going to the left rear wheel speed sensor along the wiring here were rubbed through through the insulation and its explosive copper wires and then you can see the green telltale sign of green whatever they call that copper sulfate corrosion and its its melted right through the wire. So theres our source of zero voltage to the left rear wheel sensor so were not going to need to more than likely not going to need to replace the sensor.
But just repair the connector in im going to see if i can get a new connector in or if i just need to repair this wire here. But thats encouraging weve got that squared away now well just see see what the deal is with the pump well im going to go ahead and fix the bad wiring. I see here before i proceed on with testing.
The compressor circuit back here just to make sure that its not somehow related. Although quite certain its not but mazal fix what we know is bad and then move on to the next issue. So im just going to cut out the bats action and solder in a new wire of the same gauge.
Im going to use some shrink tubing and then im going to wrap this up. And maybe even put some protective shielding around it so that doesnt happen again okay. This pump is dead to the world so its got 12 volts.
Its got a good ground. And its not its not punky. So its going to go a few mounting screws.
An electrical connector and air hose disconnect that little vent hose. There we go. Theres the old unit.
Just i had to order one so ive got it overnighted a lot of times in alaska. These parts can be difficult especially on you know something thats a few years old. They dont always have them in stock.
But we get got it coming for tomorrow. So im just ready to button this thing up when the pump comes in well double check it after we get installed. But i think this ones progressing along nicely.
We check back in tomorrow. Okay we got our compressor in come in a pretty big box probably going to have all the bracket. There we go complete unit pretty much plug and play got a new vent filter.
Yeah pretty straightforward so matter of bolt it on and plug and play ill get this thing jacked up and pull the old bracketry off and slam this puppy on okay i got it lower back down. Ive connected my scanner so were going to test the system. Again.
Clear. The codes first and functional test. Compressor on oh yeah here the pump running crash for climbing pressure voltage position sensors are in line excellent we have success all right well another successful repair anyway.
