Spacefaring sci fi. There are two very different kinds of combat the slugfest between massive massive battleships and the twitchy dogfighting of fighters. Buzzing around them 2015’s rebel galaxy.
An action rpg that’s focused on the former but it’s a prequel spin off rebel galaxy outlaw shifts gears to specialize in the latter. This is a flashy modern revival of the gameplay style of classics like wing commander privateer and freelancer and it even all. But eliminates the most annoying part of dogfighting with a creative and entirely optional piloting assist the campaign missions are stretched to over an open region of space that’s two sizes too large.
But there’s more than enough going on to make rebel galaxy. A stellar single player game. Our character.

June omar. Kev is about as gruff and ornery as they come her initial motivation of tracking down the brute who killed her husband sets. A determined mood that justifies whatever approach you want to take you can fund your quest through this universe of aliens and han solo as smugglers with anything from hunting pirate lords for bounties to mining asteroids to buying low and selling high or alternatively you could turn to straight up murderous piracy yourself.
But being capable in combat is an absolute necessity for just getting from point a to point b in this region of space. Where the population appears to be about 45 pirate. So it’s great that allah has a bold and absolutely shameless solution to the age old problem of doggedly chasing the directional indicator to get your target on screen.
And it has quickly become one of my guiltiest gaming pleasures you simply hold the left trigger to automatically homed in on your target. It’s not a guarantee you’ll hit them. But it gets you pretty close yes.

That does sound incredibly lazy. But it sure is effective at creating the illusion of being a great pilot higher difficulty levels like the one labeled old school turn all the assists off. Though so.
If you want to throw the chase you got it it’s a little disappointing that even though there’s a good range of ships flying around to shoot at rebel galaxies outlaw only has five that you can fly but wait i’m wrong there are four more unlockable ships out there hidden behind a side mission that i didn’t come across in more than 40 hours. No spoilers here. But pay more attention to radio ads than i did every ship is a big deal because they each have their own unique cockpit and hud layout and let’s take a moment to talk about the ship painting tool.
I’ve never seen anything quite like it in a game. It’s like a photoshop style art program that lets you paint directly onto your ship. Definitely watch a youtube tutorial video to get the hang of it but when you do it’s pretty crazy.

What you can produce. Anyway. Dogfights can get pretty hairy when there are multiple enemies ganging up on you.
But you can pause the action and bring up your radial menu at any time that allows you to take a moment to adjust your power balance between weapons shields and engines and go into a tactical radar. View to get your bearings also playing the story missions. Unlocks wingman.
Who can be called in every 10 minutes. Which is essential for making the enemy split their fire between the two of you and take some of the pressure off you in a big fight. It is a little annoying to wait for that 10 minute cooldown to expire.

So you can start a new mission with back up though most of what you’re doing out there is inherently repetitive shooting down fighters is pretty much the same thing over and over and most of the time the generic missions you’re sent on have you clearing out pirates. Who are sometimes attacking freighters or mining ships mission variety does improve when they start throwing capital ships at you and you have to strafe their turrets to weaken them. But in general there’s always the consistently entertaining light show of lasers missiles and explosions that keeps things interesting and ela does do a fairly good job of giving you other things to do between missions.
Visiting local bars gives you the option to play a fully functional pool game a slot machine dice poker and an asteroids clone. None of it is super deep or meaningful to the story. But it provides a nice break from the grind now law also does its best to automate away the genres.
Other tedious activities. The long distance travel. If you don’t want to sit through transit between space stations and mission waypoints.

You simply hold a button to activate autopilot to instantly skip to your destination unless you’re interrupted by pirates or an optional distress signal side mission the problem is that on long runs. It’s just annoying you autopilot to a gate jump through it autopilot to the next gate and then jump through that and repeat. It seeing a mission description that required more than three jumps immediately made me want to skip it in favor of something more local and some story missions require it did you really need to have me fly all the way here to tell me this i was left with the feeling that a lot of this travel is there to pad out the length of the campaign.
Which took me about 35 hours to play through shimming. Some of that out might have cut down on the feeling of repetition that creeps in midway. The music.
Though never gets repetitive. Because there’s simply so much of it the soundtrack includes more than 20 hours worth of country in latin rock grouped into 7 gta style radio stations. Which come complete with their own djs and in universe ads.

There’s not a lot of recognizable tunes. Unless you mix in your own library. But it’s all generally good stuff to cruise and fight to rebel galaxy outlaw is a very successful throwback to the days of dog fighting games like star wars x.
Wing and wing commander privateer. It smartly updates. The gameplay with optional assists that make it a snap to jump in and get right to the most satisfying parts of the action this open area of space.
Where free to defend or exploit is full of side activities. Including a crazy ship painting tool and those blunt the inherent repetition of fighter versus fight air combat scenarios and the story well definitely padded out more than it needs to be is suitably. Small scale and personal for their mercenary smuggler type.
